Between forest and open water.
Lake Manyara sits beneath the Rift Valley escarpment, where forest gives way to woodland and lakeshore habitats. The landscape changes over surprisingly short distances, making every turn a different scene.
Watch for movement overhead as well as on the ground. Monkeys, waterbirds and the play of light across the lake are as much a reason to visit as any particular animal sighting.

Expectations
Lake conditions and wildlife sightings vary; no particular encounter is promised.
A few things worth knowing.
Are tree-climbing lions guaranteed?
No. Manyara is associated with this behaviour, but lions and other wildlife are free-ranging. Enjoy the whole park rather than planning around one sighting.
Does the lake always look the same?
No. Rainfall and changing water levels affect both the shoreline and the birdlife.
