Selous Game Reserve

The Selous Game Reserve, located in southern Tanzania, is one of the largest and oldest protected areas in Africa. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to its exceptional biodiversity and undisturbed wilderness, the Selous Game Reserve covers approximately 50,000 square kilometers, making it larger than some countries. Situated in the southern part of Tanzania, the Selous Game Reserve is named after Frederick Selous, a British explorer, hunter, and conservationist. It is part of the greater Selous Ecosystem, which includes other protected areas. The reserve boasts diverse landscapes, including grassy plains, woodlands, swamps, and the winding Rufiji River, the largest river in East Africa. The Rufiji River delta creates a complex network of channels, lakes, and sandbanks. Selous is renowned for its incredible biodiversity, with a vast array of wildlife species. Large populations of elephants, buffalo, and hippopotamus can be found along the riverbanks, while predators like lions, leopards and African wild dogs roam the savannah. The reserve is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 440 bird species recorded, including the rare and endangered species such as the African vulture and the Southern ground hornbill. Boat Safaris: The Rufiji River offers a unique opportunity for boat safaris, allowing visitors to explore the waterways, witness hippos and crocodiles and observe birdlife along the banks.
